Audio Restoration: How Old Recordings Get Their Voices Back

Old recordings hold voices that matter. A parent telling a story, a grandparent singing, an interview no one can repeat. Time is hard on them. Tape adds hiss, old equipment adds hum, and a noisy room can bury the words.

Audio restoration removes those problems and keeps the person exactly as they sounded. Here is what it can fix, where it stops, and how we approach it.

What audio restoration fixes

Most old recordings suffer one or more of these:

• Tape hiss. A steady, soft rush behind everything.
• Electrical hum and buzz. A low drone at a fixed pitch, often caused by the power supply.
• High-pitched whine. A thin, constant tone, common on old video soundtracks.
• Background noise behind voices. Traffic, a fan or a busy room competing with speech.
• A dull, muffled tone. Speech that sounds as if it comes through a wall.

Each one is a separate sound sitting on top of the voice. That is good news. A separate sound can be measured, and what can be measured can be reduced.

Restoration is not mixing or mastering

Some studios sell "audio post-production": mixing many tracks, mastering for streaming services, adding sound effects. That is a different job, for new productions.

We do restoration. We take one existing recording and repair it. We do not remix it, master it for podcasts or add effects. The goal is the original moment, heard clearly.

The rule we never break: it must still sound like them

A cleaner recording that sounds like someone else is a failure. So we never change the pitch, the speed or the length of a recording.

We use the gentlest setting that fixes each problem. A little room sound stays on purpose, because dead silence sounds fake. When a stronger repair might help, we compare it with the gentle version by ear and keep the one that still sounds like the person.

Where restoration stops

Honest limits matter:

• If a voice was barely captured, restoration cannot invent the missing words.
• If two people talk over each other far away, separating them may not be possible.
• Results vary through a recording. One part may clean up well while another stays rough.
